One of the questions that continually comes up when thinking about a website or redesigning a website is:
What do I put on my site and what do I tell the world about my company?
This is an area that causes much confusion and can lead quickly in the wrong direction. The pitfall that most businesses get caught up in is writing information from their perspective and telling their company story and even worse the company history.
Remember to catch visitor interest it must be about "not you" but "them". They really aren't interested in you yet, they want to learn how they can solve their problems and issues and what kind of results you've achieved for others.
We once worked with a non-profit organization, who came to us because they were trying to raise money for one of their causes which involved getting people to register for a golf outing. They found they were getting little interest and few sign ups. The event was in danger of being cancelled.
We came in just in time to help them create an email program to promote their outing. They got signup's and sponsors very quickly and it ended up being a very successful event. Sometimes it's just getting the word out in a way that doesn't annoy people but solicits their help and cooperation. Email marketing can be the key when done correctly. Every site should have this critical component for success.
